  52. STORAGE
  53.  
  54.      Acetaminophen and hydrocodone combination tablets, capsules, and liquid
  55. should be stored at room temperature in tightly closed, light-resistant
  56. containers.
  57.  
  58. USES
  59.  
  60.      This medication is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.  Hydrocodone
  61. is a narcotic analgesic that acts on the central nervous system (brain and
  62. spinal cord) to relieve pain.
  63.  
  64. TREATMENT
  65.  
  66.      To avoid stomach upset, take this drug with food or milk.
  67.      Each dose of the oral liquid form of this medication should be measured
  68. carefully with a specially designed 5-ml measuring spoon, not with an ordinary
  69. kitchen teaspoon.
  70.      This medication works most effectively if you take it at the onset of
  71. pain, rather than waiting until it becomes intense.
  72.      If you are taking this medication on a regular schedule and you miss a
  73. dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for
  74. your next dose.  In that case, don't take the missed dose at all; just return
  75. to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next dose.
  76.  
  77. SIDE EFFECTS
  78.  
  79.      Minor.
  80.  
  81.      Constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, false sense of well-being, flushing,
  82. light-headedness, loss of appetite, nausea, painful or difficult urination, or
  83. sweating.  These side effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the
  84. medication.
  85.      If you are constipated, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  86. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  87. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  88.      To reduce mouth dryness, chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips or hard
  89. candy.
  90.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up from a sitting or
  91. reclining position slowly, and be careful on stairs.
  92.  
  93.      Major.
  94.  
  95.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  96. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  97. anxiety, difficulty in breathing, excitation, fatigue, palpitations, rash,
  98. restlessness, sore throat and fever, tremors, unusual bleeding or bruising,
  99. weakness, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.
  100.  
  101. INTERACTIONS
  102.  
  103.      This medication interacts with several other types of drugs:
  104.      1. Concurrent use of this medication with other central nervous system
  105. depressants (such as alcohol, antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepine
  106. tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, and phenothiazine tranquilizers) or with
  107. tricyclic antidepressants can cause extreme drowsiness.
  108.      2. A monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor taken within 14 days of this drug
  109. can lead to severe side effects.
  110.      3. Long-term use and high doses of the acetaminophen portion of this
  111. medication can increase the effects of oral anticoagulants (blood thinners,
  112. such as warfarin); this combination may lead to bleeding complications.
  113.      4. Anticonvulsants (antiseizure medications), barbiturates, and alcohol
  114. can increase the liver toxicity caused by large doses of the acetaminophen
  115. portion of this medication.
  116.      TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently taking,
  117. especially any of those listed above.
  118.  
  119. WARNINGS
  120.  
  121.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  122. any medications, especially to acetaminophen, hydrocodone, or other narcotic
  123. analgesics (such as codeine, hydromorphone, meperidine, methadone, morphine,
  124. oxycodone, and propoxyphene).
  125.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had acute
  126. abdominal conditions, asthma, blood disorders, brain disease, colitis,
  127. epilepsy, gallstones or gallbladder disease, a head injury, heart disease,
  128. kidney disease, liver disease, lung disease, mental illness, prostate disease,
  129. thyroid disease, or urethral strictures.
  130.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any
  131. activity that requires you to remain alert, such as driving an automobile or
  132. operating potentially dangerous equipment.
  133.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, be sure
  134. to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.
  135.      * Because this product contains hydrocodone, it has the potential for
  136. abuse and must be used with caution.  Usually, it should not be taken on a
  137. regular schedule for longer than ten days at a time.  Tolerance develops
  138. quickly; do not increase the dosage or stop taking the drug abruptly unless
  139. you first consult your doctor.  If you have been taking large amounts of this
  140. medication for long periods, you may experience a withdrawal reaction
  141. (diarrhea, excessive yawning, gooseflesh, irritability, muscle aches, nausea,
  142. runny nose, shivering, sleep disorders, stomach cramps, sweating, trembling,
  143. vomiting, or weakness).  Your doctor may, therefore, want to reduce the dosage
  144. gradually.
  145.      * Because this product contains acetaminophen, additional medications
  146. that contain acetaminophen should not be taken without your doctor's approval.
  147. Check the labels on over-the-counter (nonprescription) pain, sinus, allergy,
  148. asthma, diet, cough, and cold products to see if they contain acetaminophen.
  149.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  The effects of this
  150. medication during pregnancy have not been thoroughly studied in humans.
  151. Regular use of hydrocodone in large doses during pregnancy can result in
  152. addiction of the fetus, leading to withdrawal symptoms (diarrhea, excessive
  153. crying, excessive yawning, fever, irritability, sneezing, tremors, or
  154. vomiting) at birth.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an
  155. infant.  Small amounts of this medication may pass into breast milk and cause
  156. excessive drowsiness in the nursing infant.
